Our adoption journey

2nd Home Study Visit done!! September 22, 2007

We had our second home study visit this week and it too went very well. We are so impressed with our social worker. She is very helpful, organized, and knows what she is talking about! We look forward to having our third meeting this next week and our final meeting next weekend already! We are more than impressed by the depth of the discussions, but also the speed at which we are getting this completed. I know there will be lots of waiting, but for now the process seems to be clipping along.

This week’s meeting is all about our journey to adoption. Why we want to adopt and how we came to choose Ethiopia. Both Dave and I can’t wait to tell her our story. It’s been a very long journey! I still have to pinch myself every once in awhile – we’re really expanding our family and adopting! :)

Our dossier paperwork (the paperwork that has to go to Ethiopia) is slowly starting to pile up in my little blue folder as well. We are still waiting for some birth certificates for me and the kids, but most everything else is done! (O.K, the pictures are in the camera and I need to choose some and print them…) We are also waiting for a letter of health for our kids and wouldn’t you know it, our doctor is on holidays.

We hope to have all the dossier documents sent to CAFAC by the middle of next month. (Earlier if the birth certificates get here sooner!)

Then we will be waiting for the seminar at the beginning of November. I’m getting very excited to see who is all going to be there! I’m sure there will be families like us who just missed the last seminar and are almost ready to send their dossier away. Others might be at the beginning of the process. It will be fantastic to meet the CAFAC staff who have been so helpful and form friendships with people who we may travel with to pick up our children! I’m sure those bonds will be very special to us and our children.

Our two children at home (we’ll just have to start calling them peanut and budder so they have some identity on this blog.) are really enjoying the process of meeting our social worker. Last time I wrote that they were very shy. They warmed up considerably this past week and mentioned how much they like her. They are having a great time at school this year. Both got off to a great start and have some fantastic friends. This past week we drove to Winnipeg one evening and we all spent the ride discussing baby names – a fun, but very surreal experience.

1st Home Visit Done! September 14, 2007

We had our first home visit with our social worker today and it went very well! She is a wonderful lady who is really interested in helping us through the process of adoption. She was fantastic with our kids (even though they were very shy and didn’t expand on any questions!) Next Tuesday she is back for our second visit and they want to show her tricks on the trampoline. We found out that our social worker has done home studies for other families that we know and it was interesting to find out how many people we had in common! (she didn’t share any details, just that she had done them and enjoyed working with all of them)

We also got our dossier paperwork from Cafac this week and we’ve started compiling all of the paperwork for that now. It shoudln’t take too long to get it all together, but it is another list to work through. Boy, I knew there would be a lot of paperwork, but perhaps not this much! At the same time I’m glad that there are checks and balances in place to insure that parents are able to take on the added responsibility. We need to get all of that in to Cafac within the month if we can so that everything can be ready to go after our educational seminars in November.

Things keep moving along and we have more than enough things to fill our days while we wait. Tomorrow I want to start priming penut’s room in the basement so that she can move in when she feels ready. We’ve yet to find bedding we all like, so we’ll prime and wait to buy paint.

awaiting first meeting September 7, 2007

Today marks one week until our first meeting for our home study. It feels so wonderful to have the process moving along at such a good pace. (I know it won’t always be this way) With the kids gymnastics starting up this week I do wonder if I’ll actually get the house into “spic and span” shape by then… I’m sure I’ll be up late Thursday night finishing jobs I didn’t get done during the week. I’m sure that it won’t even matter to our social worker, but it does feel weird to have a stranger come in to our house and be a part of such huge decisions in our life.

The first week of school was great for all three of us returning to the academic life. It’s going to be a great year for us!
